Former Western Michigan University athletic administrator Robert Culp was the recipient of the 1963 ABCA/Wilson Lefty Gomez Award.

Culp, who was nationally recognized, was Western Michigan's sports information director from 1957-67 and the athletic business manager from 1967-81. When he retired in 1986, he was associate professor of health, physical education and recreation.

From 1964-76, Culp was the national secretary-treasurer of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). In 1966, he was selected as the organization's president.

In addition, the South Bend, Ind. native was involved as president and secretary-treasurer of the Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association.

During his career, Culp won several awards -- including CoSIDA's coveted Arch Ward award in 1967 and the Wilber Snypp 'service plaque' in 1963 and 1980, respectively. He was also one of seven finalists for the athletic business manager of the year award in 1978.

Named after the great Lefty Gomez, this annual award is presented to an individual who has distinguished himself among his peers and has contributed significantly to the game of baseball locally, nationally and internationally. The Lefty Gomez Award is sponsored by Wilson Sporting Goods.
