Current ABCA Board Member and 1979 ABCA Hall of Fame inductee Glen Tuckett was awarded the ABCA/Wilson Lefty Gomez Award in 1990.
As one of Brigham Young University's winningest coaches, Tuckett finished 17 seasons - his entire coaching career at BYU - above .500. He compiled a 445-256-4 record (.634), and his teams won 13 division baseball titles and three conference championships. Under his direction, the Cougars posted two NCAA District 7 crowns and went to the College World Series twice in 1968 and 1971. He was District 7 Coach of the Year three times.
After graduating from Murray High School he entered professional baseball but continued his studies, obtaining his B.S. degree in 1953. Tuckett spent nine years in the professional ranks before launching his coaching career at West High School in Salt Lake City.
A native of Murray, Utah, Tuckett came to BYU in 1959 where he served as an assistant football coach and head baseball coach. One of the highlights of his career came in 1974 when he was chosen as coach of the United States team which won the World Amateur Baseball Tournament for only the second time in the tournament's 27-year history.
Tuckett, the 1977 president of the ABCA, was the ninth winningest baseball coach in the NCAA at the time of his retirement.
Tuckett, who served as Chairman of the ABCA Board of Directors from 2004-10, took over as BYU's athletic director in 1976, replacing Stan Watts. He has served on a variety of committees including the NCAA Committee on Committees, NCAA Television Committee, College Football Association Executive Committee and College Football Association Television Committee. Tuckett led BYU to 16 football bowl appearances and one trip to Japan in 17 years as the Athletic Direcotr. He was the driving force in the expansion of the football stadium in 1982.
In 1985 Tuckett was inducted into to the Utah Old Time Athletes Association Hall of Fame and in 1995 to the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Hall of Fame. He also was inducted to the Murray High School Hall of Fame and the Utah Summer Games Hall of Fame.
Tuckett was also the recipient of the 2007 BYU Distinguished Service Award Recipient and was inducted into the BYU Hall of Fame in 1982.
Named after the great Lefty Gomez, this annual award is presented to an individual who has distinguished himself among his peers and has contributed significantly to the game of baseball locally, nationally and internationally. The Lefty Gomez Award is sponsored by Wilson Sporting Goods.
